If the past is any indication, Grand Theft Auto Online’s Winter Update – usually known as Festive Surprise – should be just around the corner. While Rockstar has yet to confirm the arrival of snow and holiday-themed goodies to San Andreas, we’re here to break down everything we know about the much-anticipated event.

GTA Online Winter Update: Festive Surprise 2021 Start Date

Rockstar has yet to reveal when/if Festive Surprise 2021 will begin, but it has held this wintry event every year since 2014. In the past, the event has begun as early as December 18 and as late as December 20, and it lasts until the first week of January.

What Is Festive Surprise and What Rewards Does It Offer?

Festive Surprise is a limited-time free event for all Grand Theft Auto Online players. Not only does it bring snow that players can enjoy and/or create surprisingly lethal snowballs to attack other players or NPCs with, but it also has come with new vehicles, weapons, holiday gifts, and outfits.

There are also usually daily rewards for those who wish to log in each day, and previous gifts have included a Fireworks Launcher.

Some of the vehicles added during the event have been the Vapid Slamvan, Bravado Rat-Truck, Dewbauchee Massacro, and Dinka Jester. The weapons include the Homing Launcher, Proximity Mines, and the previously mentioned snowballs and Firework Launcher.

Special Crate Drops have occured and contain items from previous events, like beer hats and a ton of limited edition t-shirts that are no longer available.

If that’s not enough, Christmas Trees are added to all apartments and new tattoos are available at all tattoo parlors to add some festive spirit to your character.

Will Festive Surprise 2021 Launch with The Contract Story Expansion Featuring Franklin and Dr. Dre?

GTA Online is getting a brand-new story-focused expansion called The Contract on December 15. This DLC is set years after the events of GTA 5’s campaign and focuses on Franklin working in his new “celebrity solutions agency.” What makes this expansion even more special is the addition of Dr. Dre to the game alongside new music from the artist.

The Contract’s upcoming release may be why we haven’t heard anything about Festive Surprise 2021, and there is always a chance it will be a surprise drop and be part of this new update that is arriving very soon. Alternatively, Rockstar may wait until after it’s out in the wild to talk about what’s next, as it may even be delayed a bit this year.

As soon as we learn more about Festive Surprise 2021, we will update this page accordingly and keep you up to date with everything related to this year’s Winter Update.
