Open-world games are exhausting, which is part of the reason why games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey aren’t on my radar. However, one upcoming open-world game that has taken hold of me is Cyberpunk 2077. Go figure, considering it’s in the name of this post.

Granted, I’m a huge fan of science fiction and cyberpunk settings have always grabbed at me, but my love for the genre isn’t enough to get me to buy a game that takes place in a sci-fi setting. No, it takes much more. Then again, Cyberpunk 2077 is being made by CD Projekt Red, and considering how enthralled I’ve become with The Witcher III again, I feel like I might have something big to look forward to.

From The Witcher To Cyberpunk

Many of the conventions from The Witcher series have made it into CD Projekt’s upcoming game, but there’s more than meets the eye here. They’ve seemingly drawn together games like Deus Ex and The Witcher to create a first-person RPG that will rival the replayability and immersion of games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Based on what I’ve picked up from interviews of CD Projekt Red development staff, Cyberpunk 2077 will be a first-person RPG, with mechanics rather similar to the aforementioned Deus Ex series. Like Deus Ex, it will take place in a cyberpunk (go figure, considering the title) style city, complete with all the things you’d expect to see. Rampant crime, vast disparity between the wealthy and poor, awesome gadgets, neat weapons, tons of neon, and of course, plenty of adult themes.

Actually, that last bit probably has more to do with the developer and less to do with the setting. Then again, almost all depictions of cyberpunk societies tend to feature what we’d consider taboo vices as part of normal life. But no, that still isn’t enough! I love first-person RPGs and cyberpunk style sci-fi settings, but I can’t buy a game on that alone. That’s how I ended up spending money on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which will likely never reach a narrative conclusion as long as Square Enix holds the reins.

What’s that? CD Projekt Red is focusing on making choices matter? Great. Replayability is paramount? Wonderful. Character customization is going to be available? Awesome.

Upgrades to your character are going to actually be real modifications? Hold the phone. Yes, my understanding is thus. If you upgrade your abilities, you character needs to replace body parts… Wicked. I’m getting a Minority Report vibe; you know that part where Tom Cruise’s character gets his eyes transplanted?

Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be something I won’t be able to turn down, and while I’m disappointed that they’re remaining coy about the release date, I’m glad that they’re going to release it when it’s ready, rather than trying to hit a specific date. I just know I’m ready for something to take the place of Deus Ex in my heart.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 on your scopes? What are your feelings about the info coming out surrounding it?  Got an insider you can get us in touch with?
